POSTS / BIG SUR, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. The distinction between a private hotel and a public-facing restaurant matters for visitors to Post Ranch Inn at 47900 Highway 1. The property says its Sierra Mar restaurant accepts diners who are not staying overnight, for both lunch and dinner, but its breakfast service and newly reimagined spa are for overnight hotel guests only. Those are different access rules at facilities on the same cliffside property; a restaurant booking does not grant use of the pools, spa or guest areas.
Which restaurant services can the public use?
The operator’s official dining page lists lunch daily from noon to 2 p.m. and dinner daily from 5:30 to 9 p.m.. Both services are described as available to hotel guests and the general public, subject to reservations and space. Breakfast runs 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. but is explicitly limited to overnight guests.
The property’s hotel FAQ says public dining availability is limited. It states that dinner reservations are required and says reservations for lunch are strongly recommended, even while a general introduction describes public dining by advance reservation. Because those statements have slightly different wording, the safest practice is to book lunch or dinner in advance and obtain confirmation; do not assume walk-in lunch seating is available.
How does a member of the public book?
The official contact page separates hotel-guest reservations from reservations for the general public. It links an online booking system for outside diners and gives Sierra Mar (831) 667-2800 and foh@postranchinn.com for restaurant enquiries. Hotel-guest dining uses the main reservations number (831) 667-2200. A published booking link is not live proof of a table at a particular hour, and this article does not quote an unverified total bill or represent that a reservation was made.
The operator says most dietary preferences can be accommodated with advance notice, but visitors with serious allergies should confirm particulars directly. Its sample menus are examples and can change; do not assume a past online menu or third-party price is the exact offering for a future date.
Can outside diners use the spa?
No. The property’s spa policy explicitly restricts the Post Ranch Spa to overnight hotel guests. It describes a recently redesigned space with five treatment rooms and recommends advance booking due to demand. The spa lists published hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for eligible hotel guests, but that does not create a public day-pass offering.
Likewise, a lunch or dinner reservation does not establish a right to enter private lodging areas or use the property’s pools and other amenities. The fact that nearby Esalen Institute separately offers some advance-booked day experiences does not make Post Ranch Inn’s hotel-only spa available to non-guests.
Highway 1 and local transportation
Post Ranch’s address is 47900 Highway 1, Big Sur, CA 93920. The operator warns that rideshare services are extremely limited because cell coverage is inconsistent, and suggests arranging round-trip transportation rather than depending on an app pickup after dining. Guests driving from Monterey or the south should consult Caltrans QuickMap for current lane controls and highway conditions. The hotel’s statement that Highway 1 is open for access does not mean there are no construction delays anywhere on the route.
What this guide does and does not establish
The local question is who can use each facility, not whether a specific table, hotel room or spa treatment is available tonight. The official policies distinguish a public restaurant, hotel-exclusive breakfast and hotel-exclusive spa. Reservation systems, prices, room inventory and special restrictions can change and should be checked before travel.
